Send your first email campaign
Step-by-step guide to send your first email campaign in K2Mailer: set up sender identity, verify your domain, pick an audience, run preflight, and schedule.
Quick answer: how do you send your first email campaign in K2Mailer?
To send your first email campaign in K2Mailer, save your sender identity and mailing address, verify a sending domain, connect a sending server, add contacts who gave permission, create the campaign content with a working unsubscribe link, send a test, choose one audience type, run Campaign Preflight, and schedule the send. Then watch the results under Statistics → Campaigns.
Most first-time setups take 30 to 60 minutes, and the longest part is usually waiting for DNS records to propagate. Everything after the domain is verified can be done in a single sitting.
What you need before you start
- Sender identity
- Your organization name, From details, and the physical mailing address. Many anti-spam laws require a real postal address in commercial email.
- A domain you control
- The domain in your From address. You need access to its DNS settings to publish verification records.
- A sending server
- An SMTP service or a supported email API provider that actually delivers the messages.
- Contacts with permission
- People who opted in or have a clear existing relationship with you. Permission protects your reputation and your inbox placement.
- Content with an unsubscribe link
- Every campaign needs a visible, working way to opt out. Preflight checks for it before the schedule is created.
Prepare the account and audience
New to lists and imports? Read Lists and groups and Import contacts first. For DNS details, see Sending domains and DNS and Configure a sending server.
- 1
Open Settings → Organization and save the sender identity and physical mailing address.
- 2
Open Setup → Sending Domains, add the From domain, publish its DNS records, and verify the stored domain status.
- 3
Open Setup → Sending Servers, add and test the provider or SMTP service that will deliver the message.
- 4
Add contacts with permission to receive your email. A contact can belong to zero, one, or many lists, and list membership keeps its own subscription state.
- 5
If you need a reusable subset, create a Segment before scheduling. You can also target selected Individual Contacts directly.
Create, check, and schedule
- 1
Open Campaigns → Create New, enter the internal name and recipient-facing subject, then create the HTML and text content manually, from a template, or with AI assistance.
- 2
Include a working unsubscribe mechanism and keep the configured physical mailing address available to the campaign.
- 3
Save the campaign and use Content Analysis when you want deterministic content checks plus the AI or moderation layers available to your plan.
- 4
Choose Schedule, then select exactly one audience type: Lists, Segments, or Individual Contacts.
- 5
Choose the sending server, send time, and sending speed, then run Campaign Preflight.
- 6
K2Mailer stops the schedule when a deterministic blocker remains. When the current preflight UI finds no blockers, it shows the ready state and proceeds automatically.
- 7
Monitor the production send under Statistics → Campaigns.
Content and delivery are separate today
Saving campaign content does not send it. The Schedule step chooses the audience, sending infrastructure, delivery time, and rate. K2Mailer keeps those records separate internally while presenting them as one campaign workflow to the operator.
Choose the right audience type
- Lists
- Best for a standing group such as a newsletter. List membership keeps its own subscription state, so unsubscribes are respected per list.
- Segments
- Best when you want a reusable, rule-based subset, for example recently active contacts or a specific customer group. See Campaign audience targeting.
- Individual Contacts
- Best for tests and small, hand-picked sends. This is also the path used by Send Test Email.
One audience type per schedule
A schedule accepts exactly one audience type. If you need to reach a list and a segment, plan the audience so one type covers everyone, or schedule separate sends.
Send a safe test first
Send Test Email uses the same scheduled Individual Contacts delivery path rather than the old direct-send shortcut. Select one or more contacts from the contact picker and run the same preflight safeguards before the test is queued.
Test schedules and their statistics are marked as tests and excluded from normal campaign listings, production statistics, dashboard campaign KPIs, and campaign-segment reporting.
Open the test on a phone and on a desktop mail client. Check the subject line, preview text, links, images, and the unsubscribe link before you schedule the real send.
First campaign launch checklist
For a deeper look at what the gate validates, read Run Campaign Preflight before scheduling.
- The From domain shows a verified status and your sending server test passes.
- Your contacts opted in, and obviously stale or purchased addresses are not in the audience.
- The subject line is specific and honest, and the content matches what subscribers expected to receive.
- The unsubscribe link works and the physical mailing address is present.
- Every link opens the right page, and images have alt text so the email still makes sense with images off.
- You sent a test and reviewed it on at least one phone.
- Campaign Preflight reports no blockers.
What to check after you send
Open Statistics → Campaigns and review delivery, clicks, unsubscribes, bounces, and spam complaints together. Clicks are the strongest first-party engagement signal. Open rates and open locations are directional only, because privacy proxies and image prefetching can inflate or distort them. See Read and export campaign statistics.
If bounces or complaints look high, pause before the next send and review Bounce and feedback loops. A healthy first send builds the sender reputation every later campaign depends on.
Common first-campaign problems
- Schedule will not save
- Campaign Preflight found a blocker such as a missing unsubscribe link, an inactive sending server, or a malformed link. Fix the item it names and run preflight again.
- Estimated audience is zero
- Subscription state, suppression, complaint, or hard-bounce rules removed every contact. Check the contact status and the list or segment you selected.
- Test is missing from statistics
- This is expected. Test sends are marked as tests and excluded from production statistics and dashboard KPIs.
- Domain will not verify
- DNS changes can take time to propagate. Re-check the exact record names and values, then see Sending domains and DNS.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does it take to send a first email campaign in K2Mailer?
- Plan for 30 to 60 minutes of hands-on work. DNS verification for the sending domain is the slowest step, and it can take longer to propagate depending on your DNS provider.
- Do I need to verify a sending domain before my first campaign?
- Yes. Campaign Preflight checks for the required K2Mailer sending-domain record and the stored SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and sender-alignment information. Authenticating your domain also protects inbox placement.
- Can I send my first campaign to a purchased email list?
- No. Send only to contacts who gave permission. Purchased or scraped lists lead to bounces, spam complaints, and damaged sender reputation, and they can violate anti-spam laws and provider policies.
- What is the difference between a list, a segment, and individual contacts?
- A list is a standing group, a segment is a rule-based subset you can reuse, and individual contacts are hand-picked recipients. A schedule uses exactly one of the three.
- Does saving a campaign send it?
- No. Saving only stores the content. Nothing is delivered until you choose Schedule, select an audience, sending server, time, and speed, and pass Campaign Preflight.
- Will test emails affect my campaign statistics?
- No. Send Test Email creates test-marked schedules that are excluded from production statistics, dashboard campaign KPIs, and campaign-segment reporting.
- What does Gmail and Yahoo expect from bulk senders?
- Large mailbox providers expect bulk senders to authenticate with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, offer easy one-click unsubscribe, and keep spam complaints low. K2Mailer Campaign Preflight checks the signed one-click unsubscribe infrastructure and the stored authentication state for you.
